Garden visit

Last Sunday was fine and sunny so a small group of us decided to visit Gwavas homestead and garden in Tikokino, about 50 kilometres away. It was a mixed bunch of us, ranging in age from 10 to 90. Tramping around other people's gardens isn't everyone's idea of a good time, but we enjoyed ourselves.
This is the homestead. Under one of those awnings were musicians, at the other you could buy morning and afternoon tea.

The rhododendrons were coming to the end of the season but still spectacular.
The owners had obligingly set up picnic tables on the lawn.
I was very taken with this climbing rose.
I was also very taken with this strange plant, which grew very tall. I found out later that it's a lily, Cardiocrinum giganteum, or giant Himalayan lily.

  1. I gate-crashed my parents' Probus group visit to Gwavas last year. Did you get to go inside? Both house and garden are gorgeous (I had a serious attack of envy over the 'cages' containing raspberry canes that were about 100 years old)...

  3. Janet - no, I didn't go inside though they were offering tours. Maybe next time - I will definitely be going there again.

Anne: yes, it's a love peaceful place.
