Like a mirage in the desert, the rain we have been promised is disappearing like a will-o-the wisp, receding the closer you try to get to it. (And I Googled will-o-the wisp to make sure that I am using it correctly. Librarians are pedantic like that.)
This morning the Government declared the entire North Island a drought zone. Drought assistance is good but rain would be better.

We were recently threatened with snow, then suddenly it disappeared from our forecast map (very much like yours). It came anyway, so have faith.
