Most of my working life has been spent in libraries, but in my younger days I trained and worked as a nurse. Now I have given up paid employment to cultivate the art of not working, and save my life at the same time. Life isn't always easy, but it's what we've got. Carpe diem!

Scary stuff

Soil moisture deficit map as of yesterday.

Sorry to harp on about the weather but it is preoccupying me at the moment. This will take years to recover from. Rain forecast in 10 days or so, according to the Met Office website. Fingers crossed.

A really depressing news story and a short video here (link) on the TVNZ website.

  1. It's raining here, even though we don't need it. I've been planting fruit trees, so it's not all bad. After our last year's drought, the lakes and ponds are now filled again.

    1. Sounds good - planting fruit trees is an act of faith in the future.

  2. How awful! Droughts are really scary. I'll have to do a rain dance for you.

  3. Those maps certainly put it into perspective. At least you have winter coming your way - that should help with rain fall shouldn't it?

  4. At last the farmers union is accepting the grass under the trees is still green, so they MUST plant trees when they can.
Looks like we'll have rain by the weekend if the farmers are lucky, thanks to tropical storm Sandra...but it is fine rain that is needed.

  6. Hadn't tuned in for ages, Judith, so glad to see you're alive, a kicking (or is that cooking)? It's hot and dry enough here, but much worse for you further north. Beautiful days in paradise, but rotten for farmers, gardens, and animals. Rain dances happening all over, I reckon. Cheers, Pat

  7. We've had a healthy amount of rain for this area in recent weeks. Maybe it will eventually make its way to you on the other side of the world.

  8. I found your comment on my blog Judith. Sorry to worry you. I find I can't write my blog at the moment because my sister is now reading it... Chemo is not working as well as we would like. Tomorrow's is cancelled because her platelets are too low. She looks really good, but the side effects have been very hard on her. She remains utterly determined to beat this though. I can't write about my fears because it would seem disloyal, but the fact remains that I am worried sick... Far, far too much wine is being drunk in this house at the moment. I must stop - and get back to a very low carb diet, because I think I'm going to need the 'Vulcan' effect (very calm, very detached) the diet gives me, and sooner rather than later.
Sorry to worry you. This weather is breaking our hearts - the garden withering by the minute - the courgettes are all a funny shape from uneven watering... :(
