Yesterday we had a tiny bit of rain, but not enough to kick up any dust or even register on the rain gauge. It may have refreshed the garden a little but will make no difference in growing feed for the stock. We need a decent amount of rain for that, a good four or five days of steady rain.
Keep up with the rain dances!

Yup, we had 3mm last night - the most rain this year.
ReplyDeleteOur south and southwest may just be ending an awful drout. We flounder in and out here in my state. The snowfall predicted for tonight should help us. But not you and your cattle.
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to arrive in extremes. We've had a spell of freezing cold, then two days of frighteningly strong winds (some tiles down), and now we're promised a week or two of rain. Maybe some will come your way too.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad used to talk about a terrible drought probably before WW 2 When you drove through Wairarapa the stench of dead animals filled the air. Sorry to be so gross. Thank-goodness today we do have better communications and organisation so that there is no need for the animals to suffer to that degree. Saw on tonight's news the lack of co-ordination between the Canterbury grain farmers who have stalks to bale and the people who could use supplementary feed. Seems to me straw is all well and good but the poor animals need water. Droughts cause so much hardship.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about what I eat. Right now I'm back making a simple smoothie for breakfast. I'm making a fairly rich version and it's hours before I want anything more to eat. Say I have the smoothie about 9 am I often don't feel hungry until nearly 3 pm when I have a snack of cheese, tomato, olives, whatever I fancy from the fridge really. I make sure I don't eat too much because John likes his dinner about 6 pm and I do like to enjoy my steak or chop ... I enjoy my meat and veggies. I might have another snack, maybe a piece of dark chocolate and some almonds late in the evening.
My current smoothie might sound weird. About 8 frozen boysenberries. 1/2 cup plain Greek yoghurt, (making easiyo at moment), 2 scoops whey protein powder, 10-15 ml lemon flavoured Norwegian cod liver oil, sometimes 30 ml cream and 1/2 cup water all whizzed together. I get Active Woman whey powder man by Leppin, from Health 2000 or the local Gym. It's not always easy to get but seems just right to me and is sweetened with stevia.
I do keep an outline of my menu on this tracker but I've been a bit slack about keeping it over the last couple of weeks http://nothingisimpossibletrackrecord.blogspot.co.nz/
Hope you get some ideas. My food is really pretty plain most of the time.
Blessings
Thanks MargieAnne. I need some ideas, I seem to have become a bit lost food-wise.
DeleteI know that New Zealand is a big country Judith but there was me settling down to watch England play NZ last night (our time) in Dunedin and blow me down but it was rained off! I know that it's clear at the other end of the country from you but maybe relief is on the way?
ReplyDeleteThe two islands are like separate countries, weather-wise. The joys of a long, narrow country!
DeleteWe've just been to Blenheim, and the river flows are down to 16 litres per second...irrigation stops at 11...some of the smaller streams are just not there.
ReplyDeleteYou still have to go a way down the South Island before it doesn't look so brown, as far as I've heard. We rode around the Grape Ride course and that was brown where not irrigated.
We're up to Whangarei soon for the four day Tour of the Northland (14-17 March)..what is the betting that they'll bring the rain?!!
We can only hope!
